Litter is unsightly no matter where it’s found,
but no more so than in front of our homes. On collection day, help
ensure that your garbage and recyclables go from your carts to the
truck without a mess. Your
setouts matter.

Holiday Collection Schedule
Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New
Year’s Day
are the only holidays that garbage, recycling,
and yard trimmings are not collected in the City of San José.
When these holidays occur Monday through Friday, collection will
be one day later throughout the rest of that week.

Recycle Your Holiday Tree
Holiday Tree Graphic
Natural and flocked holiday trees will be collected for recycling
on the same day as your garbage, recycling and yard trimmings. You
don’t need to attach an “Extra Garbage” sticker,
but you do need to remove tinsel, decorations and the tree stand.
Trees should then be cut into five-foot lengths and placed in the
street 1 foot from the curb and 5 feet from your garbage and recycling
carts and parked vehicles.

Automatic Payment Service
To arrange for automatic payments, download, print, and complete
the service application
form
or call Customer Service at (408) 535-3515 to request the
application form be sent to you by mail.

Extra Garbage
Place extra garbage on the curb near the garbage cart in 32-gallon
plastic garbage bag labeled with an extra garbage sticker. You may
buy extra garbage stickers at all San José libraries, Albertson’s
and Safeway stores, and participating 7-Eleven stores in San José.
A portion of the sales from stickers sold at San José libraries
supports library programs.

Extra Recyclables & Cardboard
Place extra recyclables in paper bags on the curb near the recycling
cart. Flatten and cut cardboard so it fits loosely inside your cart
and doesn’t prevent emptying. If you have more cardboard than your
cart will hold, flatten and cut it into pieces no larger than 4
feet by 4 feet and lean them against the cart.

Large Item Collection
You can have "bulky" items, such as sofas, refrigerators,
or tires, picked up at your curb for a small fee. To schedule a
pick-up appointment, call 535-3515.

Used Motor Oil & Filters
To recycle used motor oil and oil filters at curbside, you must
use free City-issued oil jugs and filter bags because they
are designed to prevent leaks. Place filled oil jugs and bags on
the curb near your recycling cart for collection. Oil mixed with
antifreeze, transmission fluid, or any other automotive fluid will
not be collected. To order the free oil jugs and filter bags, call
535-3515.

Household Hazardous Waste
You can schedule a free disposal appointment for hazardous
materials such as: batteries, cleaning fluids, fluorescent light
bulbs, paint, pesticides and fertilizers, pool chemicals, solvents,
medical waste, and mercury thermometers. Call the Santa Clara County
Household Hazardous Waste Program at 299-7300.
